The lives, careers, and patrons of the painters Hendrick Steenwyck I and II (father and son) are described as an introduction to this impressively researched catalogue raisonné of their paintings. Born in Antwerp and later working and studying in Frankfurt, the younger Steenwyck went on to work at the English court of Charles I. Howarth describes the family's career, including what is known of the paintings of Susanna, Steenwyck II's wife. The majority of the book contains the catalogue, with lengthy descriptions, discussion of provenance, and bibliography provided in each entry. An exhaustive bibliography is provided.
