The story is about men and power, says Rosswurm (history, Lake Forest College), more broadly about gendered values and institutional authority. He recounts how members of the American Catholic Church, especially its hierarchy, worked with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and its director Herbert Hoover (1895-1972) to defend, among other core values, patriarchal authority in society and family. He explains that they could not imagine a good social order in which power was not exercised thus. Though the main Catholic actors were clerics, he says, there is evidence for plenty of mutual admiration between Hoover and the laity as well.
