Studying worker experiences on the shop floor at two tortilla factories, one in California and one across the US-Mexican border in Baja California, Muñoz (sociology, City U. of New York) builds upon the factory regime theories of Burawoy's The Politics of Production (1985), but goes beyond his focus on the relationship between the state and the shop floor to also bring processes of racialization and gender into the analysis. She also goes beyond his discussion of despotic control of the labor process in the California agricultural industry by showing that despotic control is also a dominant form of labor control in other industries that employ significant numbers of undocumented workers.
