Kilmer (psychology and teaching, U. of North Carolina at Charlotte) et al. bring together 12 chapters that explore how communities can recover from disaster, using Hurricane Katrina as a case study and discussing lessons learned from it. Drawing from their work with children and caregivers affected by the hurricane, and discussions with educators and practitioners, contributors (including many from Louisiana) discuss issues raised by the disaster, recommendations for intervention and preparedness, and other practical implications. They emphasize effects on children and families and consider the factors and processes that influence children's adjustment; understanding the context of the child's culture, socioeconomic status, faith, and family history; the role of caregivers; and family processes. They also reflect on developmentally appropriate classroom activities, social and community responses, the roles of school-based mental health staff and faith-based organizations, and wellness approaches.
