In providing the rationale for a reference on boy culture, Steinberg (McGill U., Montreal) notes the recent trend of addressing the complexities of boys/boy culture within the fields of men's studies and masculinities research. Rather than the 167 entries written by some 100 students of boy culture being organized alphabetically, the unique encyclopedia is arranged thematically under a dozen broad sections including: "Becoming a boy, becoming a man"; "boys and the physical"; "boys in mind, boys in relationship"; " 'bad' boys"; "boys play, boys learn"; and "boys and technology." Entries offer provocative discussions that include further reading on the many aspects, challenges, and ways of growing up male (including masculine "boi" girls), and particular demographic groups.
