Published to accompany the touring exhibition of the same name organized for the Ackland Art Museum, this book features the work of Betye Saar and her daughters Lezley and Alison in their first combined exhibition. Dallow (art history, U. of Alabama, Birmingham) and Matilsky (Ackland Art Museum, U. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) provide essays discussing the works and their ties to gender, race, ethnicity, and transformation. Following the essays are 50 colorplates of mixed media sculptures, paintings, assemblages, and collages by the artists from 1964 to 2005. Chronologies and lists of exhibitions are at the end. The volume contains a collaborative installation and an essay by Tracye Saar-Cavanaugh, who describes the family and her sister and mother's artistic bent.
