Onomastics--the study of names, naming, and naming systems--is a relatively new discipline in South Africa, having taking root only in the second half of the 20th century. With this text, Neethling (Xhosa, U. of the Western Cape, Bellville, South Africa) brings together into one publication all existing relevant research on Xhosa naming. The material is presented in four sections--the naming of people, of places, of minibus taxis, and the names for the months of the year--and provides insights into the values and concerns of Xhosa society as a whole.
