Citing the emergence of a new evidentiary base upon which to construct explanations for the violent dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990s (i.e. the proceedings of the International Criminal Tribunal on the former Yugoslavia, published memoirs of key actors and other participants, and recent regional scholarship), Cohen (international studies, Simon Fraser U., Canada) and Dragovic-Soso (international relations, U. of London, UK) present 14 papers that revisit causal explanations for the events of the 1990s. Following a review of contending explanations, the papers are organized into three sections exploring the historical impact of the two World Wars and the interwar Yugoslav state; the "socialist legacy" of debates over the "national question" in the 1960s, the 1971 "Croatian Spring," and the role of intellectual elites as vectors of national ideology; and breakdowns of the 1980s tied to educational and economic factors, interregional struggles for resources, Western foreign policy, policies pursued by Slobodan Milosevic, and the actions of the Yugoslav People's Army.
