The author, a second-wave feminist from the United States, first traveled to Afghanistan in 1990 at age 65. By the late 1990s, she had become involved with the Afghan women's group NEGAR, which stood opposed to the policies of the Taliban. In this memoir, she describes her trips to Afghanistan and her work with NEGAR, including meetings with Northern Alliance leaders Burhanuddin Rabbani and Ahmad Shah Massoud, whose compound she was staying at on the night of his assassination, a few days before the September 11th attacks.
