Schumm (teaching and learning, U. of Miami) compiles 14 chapters by education scholars in Florida in a guide (which originated in a doctoral seminar in reading) to differentiated instruction for diverse learners, with English-language learners and those with disabilities as the focus. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the book is aimed at elementary general education and special education preservice teachers, practicing teachers, and those beginning a master's program. It discusses challenges faced by teachers and multiple ideas about how reading should be taught; resources for meeting those challenges; the reasons students have difficulty learning to read and write; and how to teach students with cultural and linguistic differences. The second section focuses on elementary reading curriculum, assessment, and instructional practices, with chapters connecting to the National Reading Panel report.
