Building on the notion that educators and parents must work together as equal partners, the authors (including academics from the U. of Vermont and Southern New Hampshire U. as well as participants in the prototype programs) have developed a new parent-teacher action research (PTAR) system for the benefit of children who are at risk for emotional and behavioral problems. They explain their ABC (achieving, behaving, caring) Program to administrators, addressing the theoretical foundation, recruitment and training of parent liaisons, selection of a social skills curriculum, and recruitment of child and family participants for PTAR teams. They also describe the actions of parent liaisons, explaining enlistment of parents, preparation for PTAR meetings, goal-setting, research and collection of data, analysis of data and the application of theory, dissemination, and challenges.
