An introduction provides a brief chronology of the UN sanctions on Iraq and their general impact on the economy of Iraq and the livelihood of its population. Following this introduction, there is a chapter reviewing the dynamics of gender as constructed and sustained in Iraqi society during the two decades before the imposition of sanctions. Subsequent chapters examine the impact of sanctions on Iraqi women's participation in the labor force, on the gender division of the labor force, and on female education in Iraq. One chapter is devoted to the way in which aspects of the economic and political crisis under sanctions influenced the reconstruction of gender relations and changes in women's positions inside the family.
