Villares (modern Brazilian fiction, U. of Cambridge) explores the subjective crisis, and related narrative crisis, in much of Brazilian writer Lispector's (1920-77) fiction, a salient feature that previous critics have failed to elucidate, she says. In most of her novels, she explains, the linearity of narrative is interrupted because the protagonist undergoes some sort of personal crisis. Her study draws on the works of the two US authors to discuss such aspects as haunting in Morrison's Beloved and A paixão segundo G. H., whiteness and the construction of subjectivity in O lustre, and whiteness and masculinity in A maçã no escuro. The study began as her doctoral dissertation at the University of London.
