Benjamin (Macquarie U., Sydney) provides a detailed narrative history of the dynasty and confederation of the Yuezhi during the first millennium BCE as they migrate from western China to the northern border of what is now Afghanistan and ultimately created the Kushan Empire. He draws on textual, archaeological, and numismatic sources to explore their probably origin, relationship with several Chinese dynasties, eventual military defeat and expulsion from the Gansu by the Xiongnu, migration, and role in the conquest of the former Greco-Bactria state. He ends his account in 125 BCE, when the Yuezhi had made themselves comfortable north the Amy Darya, but before they crossed that river into Bactria proper. He does not provide an index.
