Viewing the environmental justice movement as a form of social justice and an outgrowth of the civil rights movement, Fletcher (environmental studies and geography, Bishop's U., Canada) examines the relationship between environmental justice and hazardous waste siting along the U.S.-Canadian border. After reviewing the political and academic contours of environmental justice and the evidence of race and class associations with environmental injustice, he examines ten cases of hazardous waste facility siting disputes in the Niagara and Detroit regions. The case studies are analyzed in terms of spatial and social equity, procedural equity, and cumulative and intergenerational equity. He argues that information generated by academic fields such as industrial ecology will have greater importance for the environmental justice movements of the future.
