Batchelor was a Zen Buddhist nun in South Korea for 10 years before leaving monastic life in 1985, and returning to Europe to write and lead retreats. She recounts her experience in order to set the context for the autobiography of Sunim (1903-94), who was a nun from age 18 to her death, which comprises the second part of the book.
