Medical assistants in training have a variety of competencies they must learn and demonstrate, ranging from basic office procedures to clinical practices. Hardy (medical assistants' program, Brevard Community College) provides students and instructors detailed competency check-off lists keyed to performance criteria expected by the American Association of Medical Assistants (CAAHEP) and the American Medical Technologists (ABHES), including administrative competencies (such as confidentiality, professionalism, patient teaching, physician management, medical records, transcription, and bookkeeping procedures) and clinical competencies (such as assisting with examinations and medications, lab work, cardiac and respiratory testing and CPR).
