In engineering classes around the world, footage of the spectacular collapse of "Galloping Gertie," the original 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge, remains a standard object lesson in the history of civil engineering failures. Hobbs (PhD, history, U. of Washington) narrates the engineering and construction history of "Galloping Gertie," along with the events on the day of her collapse, which luckily only claimed the life of one poor canine named Tubby, followed by the engineering and construction history of both its 1950 replacement and the new bridge constructed in parallel and due to open in 2007. The narrative is supplemented by numerous photographs of the bridges under construction and, of course, of the November 7th, 1940 bridge failure.
