Finkel (The Evergreen State College) offers a deeply democratic pedagogical model, in sharp departure from the usual ways of teaching. Each chapter presents a case study, a story, or a sustained image of a teaching situation that illustrates this model in a particular way. Consideration is given to the role of books in education, the importance of student participation, the idea of a shared inquiry, the usefulness of experience, the importance of reflection, team teaching, and the separation between power and authority.
