In a work sure to be welcomed by the American and European foreign policy establishments, Trenin (Carnegie Moscow Center) argues that the Russian government should abandon any aspirations toward the traditional Russian state that once encompassed a large swath of Eurasia. The attempted reassertion of this geostrategic position is as untenable as Russia's ability to maintain itself as a pole in a multipolar world. Instead, suggests Trenin, Russia should seek integration with the European Union and align itself with the United States.
