Wiklund and Wilcox, leaders of human factors research and design practices for rival medical device companies in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, with the help of some colleagues, present 27 articles and four case studies, many first published in the journal Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry, Appliance Manufacturer, and Innovation. They cover general principles and processes, design methods and guidance, and corporate human factors programs. Among the topics are ethnographic methods for new product development, controlling complexity, and medical device user manuals. The case studies look at a personal hemodialysis system, a patient monitor, a contrast medium injector system for CT scanning, and a remotely controlled defibrillator.
