In this case study of the relationship between popular culture, travel, and transformation of place, Notar (anthropology, Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut) revisits Dali, a remote, minority-inhabited area of SW China she had enjoyed as a Lonely Planet guide- carrying student backpacker. Its Foreigner Street now also caters to urban Chinese tourists drawn to its representations in a popular 1959 film and a 1963 martial arts novel. She views Dali's theme- park fate as similar to that of other marginalized areas emblematic of an idealized past or future. Images include a map, film posters, and b&w photos.
