This newly revised edition of Jackson's 1929 publication includes 70 additional photographs, many of which have never been published before. Jackson lived from 1843 to 1942, and spent nearly 90 years drawing, sketching, and photographing the western United States. He considered himself an artist who happened to become famous as a photographer. This volume serves as an autobiography of his pioneering days and his first eight years (1870-1878) as the official photographer for the U.S. Geological Survey. Accompanying Jackson's original narrative are 25 color plates of paintings, drawings, lithographs, and hand-tinted photographic images; and 136 black & white photographs, drawings, and sketched maps.
