Some of the first abstract works of art made in America were created by obscure West Virginia artist Lazzell (1878-1956). Although known more for her woodcuts, Lazzell considered herself a painter; but she also made monotypes, hand-hooked rugs, and painted china. Editors Robert Bridges (curator, West Virginia U. Art Collection and the Mesaros Galleries) and Kristina Olson and Janet Snyder (both: art history, West Virginia U.) present nine contributions that give an overview of her life and work, including her participation in the Federal Arts Projects and her two extended trips to Europe, and discuss art studies in America at the beinning of the 20th century.
