Cole (anthropology, Dowling College, New York) and Booth (cultural history, The Ross School, New York) explore the causes and consequences of recent immigration of men and women from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America to rural and urban settings in the southern Italian region of Sicily. The book examines the experiences of immigrants involved in three kinds of 'dirty work'--domestic service, street prostitution, and agriculture. It describes the development of racial and ethnic identity within the crucible of local economy and culture; explores how networks and families promote, guide, and stymie the projects of individuals; and records the occupational and geographical mobility characteristic of immigrants to Sicily. The authors consider the dynamic effects of newcomers on Sicilian society and culture, and the island's changing relationship to the wider world.
