A sectoral systems approach to the economics of innovation, as editors Malerba (industrial economics, Bocconi U., Italy) and Mani (Centre for Development Studies, India) explain in their introduction to this collection of 11 papers, examines innovation as the result of specific variables of the firm, such as learning and capabilities, production investments, strategies, and organizational structure and the type of knowledge and technologies that characterize a sector; the links and interdependencies with other related sectors; the role of actors such as competitors, financial organization, and the government; the characteristics of demand; and the type of institutions. It also takes a process view that pays attention to exchange, competition, and cooperation in a coevolutionary setting. The presented papers utilize this approach to explore a variety of sectoral systems across a range of countries. The main actors and structures of sectoral systems of Indian pharmaceuticals, Brazilian information and communication technologies, Brazilian pulp and paper industries, Uruguayan software producers, and Brazilian aeronautics are analyzed in the first half of the book and, in the second, the dynamics and evolution of motorcycle production in Thailand and Vietnam, salmon farming in Chile, machine tools in Korea, information and communication technology in Taiwan, and biofuels in Tanzania are examined.
