Chen, formerly a professor of engineering at the U. of Hawaii, presents a reference on mathematical models of concrete and their applications to reinforced concrete structures. He reviews the usefulness and limitations of the constitutive equations and failure criteria most frequently used in practice, offering comments and ideas on improvements and refinements in these stress-strain equations. Following, he applies the classical theory of plasticity to the field of reinforced concrete. Basic concepts and experimental facts concerning the stress and strain characteristics of concrete under biaxial and multiaxial states are also covered. The book is meant as a text for graduate students with a basic background in mechanics, strength of materials, math, and material behavior, or as a tool for practitioners or research workers. The book is a reprint of the edition published by McGraw-Hill in 1982, and is based on a paper prepared for the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering Colloquium on Plasticity in Reinforced Concrete in Copenhagen in 1979.
