How does the understanding of time and history resonate in the work of practitioners of international law? In this collection of ten articles contributors show through case narratives and theoretical studies how memory figured in the interpretation of evidence, the creation of policy, and the outcome of significant contentions in practice. They cover perceptions of the historiography of international law and its interpretation, English approaches to international law in the nineteenth century, Oppenheim's influence, the quest for new sources of international law, the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties and the fragmentation of international law, the use of treaties as points of reference, piracy and the origins of enmity, and the role of distance in the British policies on the 1957 Oman and Muscat incident.
