Fredericks, a veteran teacher and professional storyteller, presents readers theater scripts for grades 4-8 based on traditional African folklore, designed to stimulate children's curiosity about other cultures and increase reading fluency. The plays are organized by region and include background information on each country represented, as well as instruction and presentation suggestions. The rationale and role of readers theater in literacy instruction is discussed, and additional resources for extending studies of African folklore are listed. B&w illustrations by Bongaman, an award-winning artist from Cameroon, are included. The author teaches elementary methods courses at York College.
