Thiessen (anthropology, Malaspina U.-College, British Columbia) looks at the lives of a group of young female engineers in Skopkje, Macedonia, between 1988 and 1996 as a lens to what is happening in the country, and especially the ethnic conflict there. She also generalizes from her field work to offer a vision of what Macedonia is and to assess the past and envision the future of the region.
