Focusing on adults with all types of disabilities, Fitzsimons (social work, Minnesota State U.) provides guidance for people with disabilities, as well as professionals and families, to fighting against violence and abuse. She discusses theories of abuse and the barriers that perpetuate violence; vulnerable situations and personal barriers; indicators of abuse, including neglect and financial exploitation; the use of supportive services and systems; and how to conduct training sessions to educate people with disabilities about prevention. The concluding chapter illustrates principles in a university-community collaboration she was involved with, The Advocacy and Empowerment Project.
