A retired social worker and longtime civil rights activist, Wood now resides in Syracuse, New York. Born in the South in 1912, she recounts her journey from Alabama's Tuskegee Institute in the 1920s, to Atlanta and the School of Social Work in the 1930s, her move north to Ohio in the 1940s, and then on to Syracuse in the 1950s to begin her public career as a social worker for the Salvation Army and for the city health department. Her memoir provides insights into the contributions made to the civil and human rights struggle by black, female insiders. No subject index.
