Clunn is a career veteran and now civilian employee of the British Army in Kalkreise, Germany. He has been involved with the archaeological excavations there, somewhere in the vicinity of which, in nine AD, three Roman legions under Quinctilius Varus were slaughtered in a running battle by German tribesmen under the command of Arminius. He combines the search for the exact location with a historically-informed fictional story of what it may have been like for a Roman soldier in the campaign.
