The decade beginning in 1965 witnessed the flowering of the Chicano/a movement in the United States. In this study of the movement, Mariscal (Latino/a art and humanities, U. of California at San Diego) seeks to rescue some of the positive aspects of the movement's cultural nationalism and its connections to wider global developments of decolonization anti-imperialism, while not ignoring the such counterproductive attitudes and harmful practices such as sexism and homophobia that have been highlighted by many contemporary Chicano/a scholars. His investigations of the internationalist aspects of the Movement, the impact of the Cuban Revolution, the discursive field of César Chávez as the "father" of the movement, alliances with Black militant groups, and Chicano/a activist circles in higher education are guided by Raymond Williams' conception of the material conditions that produce ideologies and Michel Foucault's methodology of cultural archaeology.
