Terrie (American culture studies, English and environmental studies emeritus, Bowling Green State U.) closely describes the interaction between landscape and humans, from the first to live amongst its trees to the Pataki years (new in this edition), which supported almost incredible conservation efforts but created even more pressures on the ecology. He traces the events and issues peculiar to all sides of the question of what to do with the region. His choice of primary references (apparent in abundance here) and illustrations shows how attitudes shifted along with chunks of the landscape, and how the state of New York wound up with neither an industrial site or a park.
