He argues that the pair dancing of Europe became combined with the "break" movements of African dance (associated by Europeans with sexual intercourse) to produce the distinctive salsas, tangos, and sambas of Latin America. He compares and contrasts development of Brazilian, Argentine, and Cuban dances, relating them historically to differing social relations between Africans and Europeans.
