To those who do not live there, Oklahoma is more or less the setting for a Broadway musical and the subject of photo essays on the Dustbowl. To the savvy, however, Oklahoma is central to populist, liberal and even radical theory and particularly to their practice. Joyce (history emeritus, East Central U., Ada, Oklahoma) continues his study of Sooner politics and social activism. Joyce combines the voices of those who participated in the Red Dirt music movement with Woody Guthrie, the Native American civil rights movement with Joseph Bruner, and among gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender activists seeking equality and anti-nuclear power activists seeking health. To be both Okie and radical is not that rare a thing, apparently, and Joyce is careful, through his scholarship and accessibility, to show that Oklahoma activism is based solidly on long-standing tradition rather than on transplanted ways.
