Sharp (liberal studies, California State U. at Los Angeles) tracks racist stereotypes of "savagery" versus "civilization" (seen once again in George W. Bush's "War on Terror" rhetoric) through American culture and history and links them to American perceptions of threats from abroad. He traces such imagery through the formation of Darwinian racism and its application to the Native American frontier. He then discusses how the "savagery" versus "civilization" meme was deeply embedded in Cold War science fiction depictions of future war and frequently connected to the idea of the "yellow peril."
