The 1983 first edition of Nauriat Nigiñaqtuat was intended to help improve the diet and so the health of people in the Northwest Arctic Regional Corporation, or the NANA region. The goal remains in the second edition, but the nutritional information--now 30 years old--has been replaced with information from Weston A. Price's (1870-1948) Nutrition and Human Degeneration (1989), an exhaustive study of traditional diets around the world. The articles identify the plant by traditional and scientific names; describe its range and habitat; show with drawings what parts are used as food; and explain picking and preserving, and traditional and non--traditional uses. Other features that appear as appropriate are recipes, stories, and photographs. The sections cover green leaves used with seal oil; leaves used cooked, raw, or fermented; berries; roots and other underground parts; and tea and medicinal plants.
