Cancer cells provide their own biomarkers (molecular indicators of a biological status), including cancer-specific mutations or changes in gene expression which can result in aberrant protein expression detectable in the circulation as the free proteins or as novel autoantibodies to those proteins. This volume, presented by Tainsky (School of Medicine,Wayne State U.), collects 22 papers describing methods for investigating cancer tumor biomarkers, chosen in order to promote the perspective that panels of biomarker analytes rather than single markers will be needed for the presymptomatic detection of cancer. The methods discussed include the use of western blotting and protein microarrays for immune system detection, analysis of glycosylation using antibody microarrays and mass spectrometry, phosphorylation on reverse phase protein microarraays, RNA expression profiling, and identification of biomarkers in response to therapeutic agents, among others. As with in the other volumes of the series, each chapter includes an introductory explanation, lists of necessary materials or reagents, step-by-step laboratory protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and pitfalls.
