In this translation of the revised Finnish edition, Lehtola (U. of Oulu) traces the evolving culture of his people (also known by outsiders by the disdained term Lapps). He discusses many aspects of the diverse aboriginal culture, and identifies Sápmi, the Sámi homeland, as the basis for the formation of a unified national identity. The study includes images of traditional and modern Sámi culture, a glossary of place names, and a list of publications by/about the Sámi in several languages.
