Eight contributions from British academics representing a range of disciplines consider issues surrounding the transformation of gender identity in countries around the world. Sample topics include the gender identity of eunuchs in Byzantium; contemporary Euro-American medical treatment of intersex infants; and Philippine tomboi--women who live like men. The volume concludes with a discussion of the history of cross-dressing on the Japanese stage.
