Thirwall (applied economics, U. of Kent) and consultant Pacheco-López argue that free-trade fundamentalism has run its course. They believe that recent events in both developing and developed nations indicate that analysts and policymakers must refine their theories and measurement protocols to more closely monitor and deter some of the current realities of trade performance and economic growth, which include international inequality, domestic inequality, and pervasive poverty. They maintain these effects will continue and worsen until policies based upon reality are written and enforced. Particularly interesting is their review of the literature retaliating to the liberalization of international trade, and their critique of the theory and effects of free-trade fundamentalism.
