Anglo-Norman is the form of French used in Britain between the Norman Conquest in 1066 and the middle of the 15th century. It was not properly Norman, partly because many of the invaders were from other parts of France, and partly because it became influenced by the language of the conquered English. The first edition of the Dictionary, published between 1977 and 1992 by the Modern Humanities Research Association in conjunction with the Anglo-Norman Text Society, was enhanced from the fifth volume onward by important new material, which added immensely to the knowledge of non-literary uses of the language. The second edition extends that advantage to the first half of the dictionary, and uses other new sources to revise and expand the entire work. The entries include English meanings of words and examples of their use. The first volume covers A-C and the second D-E. They are paged together. Further volumes are no doubt in the works, but no date has been set. The first edition was published over the course of 15 years; this second edition will likely be quicker.
