In introducing couple therapy and people's motivations for seeking it, Gurman (emeritus, psychiatry/director, family therapy training, U. of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison) notes that what was formerly known as marriage counseling has evolved from the "ambivalently embraced stepchild" of family therapy to a psychotherapeutic domain of its own that treats a diversity of relationships. He suggests questions to keep in mind in reading the case examples regarding the model of relationship help (e.g., behavioral, feminist/multicultural, short-term problem-focused); structure and process of therapy; therapist's role; and case conceptualization.
