Franciscan Friar Sulmasy (ethics, St. Vincent's Hospital-Manhattan and medicine and bioethics, New York Medical College) proclaims the death of the scientific, pathological approach to medicine that emerged between the Enlightenment and the establishment of university clinics in the 19th century--which he calls Foucault's clinic. People who are sick, he says, seek a form of medicine that treats them as people, and acknowledges what science cannot see or hear or accomplish. He writes for health care professionals who want to know if there is any serious, reflective basis for thinking about spirituality and health care at the same time.
