Benton (art history, Pace U., Pleasantville, NY) has written a thoughtful text suitable for introductory undergraduate courses in art history. The text proceeds chronologically, with attention throughout to themes that include use, production, patronage, politics, and religion. Unfortunately, as is common now for introductory texts, almost no ground plans are included with the many works of architecture described. A glossary and chronology are provided.
