The place of anti-racism in the politics of Europe remain little analyzed in the social science literature, notes Lentin (Refugee Studies Centre, U. of Oxford), too often confined to a simplistic understanding of it as merely the inverse of racism. She instead sees anti-racist discourses and the practices of anti-racist organizations as existing along a continuum of proximity or distance from the prevailing public political culture. Thus depoliticized ideologies of color-blindness and meritocracy considering the democratic state as the principal guarantor of justice and fairness exist on the proximate end of the continuum and ideologies of emancipation and resistance based on a more ambivalent view of the extension of rights and freedoms of some groups existing in parallel with their denial to others represents the distant. She situates changing discourse of anti-racism within the history of racism as a modern phenomenon of the nation-state in England, France, Ireland, and Italy.
