Despite his successes leading carrier forces that won WWII battles against the odds at Coral Sea, Midway, and the Eastern Solomons, by 1950, Vice Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher was portrayed as a bungler who failed to relieve Wake Island in December 1941 and who abandoned the Marines at Guadalcanal. In this study, Lundstrom (history, Milwaukee Public Museum) presents the first major reassessment of Fletcher, drawing on newly discovered documents and personal papers.
