In 1892 Berkman attempted to assassinate American industrialist Henry Clay Frick in retribution for the massacre of workers in the Homestead strike and as an incitement to wider revolution. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison. This narrative was first published in 1912 by Mother Earth Press (the introduction by John William Ward carries a 1970 copyright). It is his own account of prison life his attempt to make sense of the world he found there. In it he describes the workings of the prison system, the prisoners' strategies for survival, and the parallels between the prison and the larger society. Annotation c.
